Multi-Purpose Topsoil — Pre-Blended with Organic Compost, Ready to Plant

Our best-selling topsoil mix takes the guesswork out of preparing ground for planting. We start with 10mm screened, peat free virgin loam and blend it with our own black organic compost in controlled ratios — so what you receive is a complete, ready-to-plant growing medium, not just bulk soil that needs improving before you can use it.

Supplied in 500L bags at £50 and 1000L bulk bags (also known as dumpy bags or builders' bags) at £80, with bulk discounts on multi-bag orders.

Why pre-blended topsoil is the right choice

Buying topsoil sounds simple — but what's sold as "topsoil" is rarely ready to grow in straight from the bag:

  • Plain bulk topsoil is cheap, but often nutritionally inert, heavy, and slow to support healthy plant growth. Most landscaping topsoil is sold for filling and levelling, not for growing in directly.
  • Pure compost is too rich and too light to use on its own — it slumps in raised beds, dries out quickly, and can be too high in nutrients for many plants when used neat.
  • Blending the two yourself works, but it's heavy, time-consuming, and the ratios are guesswork. Get it wrong and your plants underperform.

Our multi-purpose topsoil solves this. The screened loam provides structure, mineral content and water-holding capacity. The blended-in organic compost adds nutrients, organic matter and beneficial soil biology. The result is a balanced, premium growing medium that's ready to plant into the moment it's delivered — no mixing, no improving, no second purchase needed.

Premium quality at a working-yard price

We're a Northumberland yard with low overheads, supplying direct within our local delivery area. That means you get a premium blended topsoil at a significantly lower price per litre than the national online topsoil suppliers, and a fraction of what equivalent volumes cost in retail bags from garden centres or DIY stores. Same blended product, same quality, far better value — particularly when you factor in our free delivery within 40 miles.

Screened to 10mm for a clean, consistent product

Every batch is screened to 10mm, removing stones, roots, large clumps and debris. That gives you a clean, fine, workable topsoil that's easy to spread, easy to rake level, and free from the surprises you sometimes get with cheaper unscreened soil. Particularly important for raised beds, vegetable plots and turfing, where stones and root fragments cause real problems.

Tested for neutral pH

Topsoil pH matters more than most gardeners realise — too acidic or too alkaline and many common plants struggle. Our topsoil blend is regularly tested and consistently sits in the neutral range, with batches typically measuring between 6.5 and 7.5 pH. That's the sweet spot for the vast majority of vegetables, ornamentals, lawn grasses and bedding plants.

100% peat free

The compost component of our blend is fully peat free, in line with the UK's move away from peat-based growing media. Choosing peat free helps protect the UK's remaining peatlands — fragile habitats that store carbon and support unique wildlife — without compromising on the quality or performance of the soil you're planting into.

A versatile topsoil for every garden job

This is a true all-rounder for outdoor growing. Use it as:

  • Raised bed and vegetable plot fill — the most popular use, ideal for new beds or topping up established ones, with the nutrition profile to grow strong, productive crops straight from planting
  • A turfing base — rake into prepared ground before laying turf or sowing grass seed to speed up establishment and encourage strong, even growth
  • A planting medium for trees, shrubs and perennials — backfilling planting holes with a properly balanced soil gives roots the best possible start
  • Border and bed top-up — refresh tired, depleted ground with a layer of premium ready-to-plant soil
  • Lawn levelling and repair — fine enough to spread and rake for repairing patches or top-dressing uneven lawns

How to use it

For raised beds and new planting areas, fill or top up to the desired depth and lightly firm — no need to add anything else, the blend is complete. For turfing, spread to 50–100mm depth and rake level before laying turf or sowing seed. For borders and existing beds, dig in to refresh tired soil or apply as a top dressing and let it work into the soil naturally over the season.

Coverage guide

Depth Coverage per 1000L bag Coverage per 500L bag
50mm ~20m² ~10m²
75mm ~13m² ~6.5m²
100mm ~10m² ~5m²
150mm ~6.5m² ~3m²

Bulk bag topsoil: the right size for any job

Our topsoil is supplied in two bulk bag sizes to suit different projects. The 500L bag is ideal for medium-sized gardening jobs — a raised bed, a section of border, or a small turfing area. The 1000L bulk bag — also referred to as a dumpy bag or a builders' bag — is the most popular size for larger jobs, landscapers and allotment groups, holding the equivalent of around twenty 50L retail bags in a single delivery. Both are delivered on a pallet for easy handling at your property.
